Forests, Livelihoods, and Conservation: Broadening the Empirical Base

چکیده
Please Develo Summary. — More than 10,000 years after the Agricultural Revolution started, millions of rural smallholders across the developing world may still derive as much income from foraging forests and wildlands as from cultivating crops. These steady environmental income flows come often from public forests, and are extracted by men and women alike. However, inflexible supplies from nature, the physical hardship of harvesting, and commonly low returns limit their role as safety nets and pathways out of poverty. While their harvesting does not preclude the ongoing conversion of wildlands to agriculture, privileged access to high-quality environmental resources can become a strong local conservation motive. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. It ’ S Complicated : Direct Vs . Incentive - Based Land Conservation in Mexico
Protected areas (PAs) and payments for ecosystem services (PES) are key global land conservation policies, yet there are few empirical comparisons of their impacts. We study how PAs and PES affected forest conservation, poverty reduction and population change at the locality level in Mexico in the past decade. We find that both generated an approximately 20% reduction in expected forest cover l...
متن کاملSocial and ecological synergy: local rulemaking, forest livelihoods, and biodiversity conservation.
Causal pathways to achieve social and ecological benefits from forests are unclear, because there are few systematic multicountry empirical analyses that identify important factors and their complex relationships with social and ecological outcomes. This study examines biodiversity conservation and forest-based livelihood outcomes using a data set on 84 sites from six countries in East Africa a...
متن کاملLivelihoods, Forests, and Conservation in Developing Countries: An Overview
— In the growing literature at the interface of rural livelihood improvement and conservation of natural forests, two overarching issues stand out: (1) How and to what extent use of forest resources do and can contribute to poverty alleviation and (2) How and to what extent poverty alleviation and forest conservation are and can be made convergent rather than divergent goals. This article summa...
متن کاملBringing People Back into Protected Forests in Developing Countries: Insights from Co-Management in Malawi
This study examines struggles to bring people back into protected forests to enhance sustainable forest management and livelihoods using insights emerging from a co-management project in Malawi. It uses mixed social science methods and a process-based conceptualization of co-management to analyze experiences, and theory of reciprocal altruism to explain major findings of continuing local forest...
متن کاملRights, governance, and conservation of biological diversity.
Losses of biological diversity, or diversity of life at all levels of biological organization, have crossed a boundary beyond which they pose serious consequences for humanity (Rockstrom et al. 2009). Despite enormous effort by state and global actors to arrest declines in biological diversity, rates of deforestation in the tropics remain high (Asner et al. 2009). Centralized state control of f...
